Dentsply Sirona Launches Primescan 2: Next-Generation Intraoral Scanner Delivers Faster Scanning and Enhanced AI-Powered Accuracy

Dentsply Sirona has unveiled Primescan 2, the successor to its widely adopted intraoral scanner, featuring a redesigned scan head, improved AI-driven data processing, and deeper integration with the DS Core digital platform.

Dentsply Sirona has officially launched Primescan 2, the next generation of its flagship intraoral scanner, at a global press event held in conjunction with the International Dental Show (IDS) 2027 preview series. The new device builds on the commercial success of the original Primescan — which has been adopted by tens of thousands of dental practices worldwide — and introduces a series of hardware and software upgrades designed to address the evolving demands of digital dentistry workflows.

Redesigned Scan Head and Ergonomics

The most immediately visible change in Primescan 2 is its redesigned scan head, which is approximately 15% lighter than its predecessor and features a slimmer tip profile for improved access to posterior regions and second molars. The device retains the same broad-spectrum LED illumination technology that made the original Primescan a benchmark for colour accuracy, but now incorporates an updated optical system that Dentsply Sirona says delivers a 20% improvement in scan speed for full-arch acquisitions. The handpiece has also been redesigned with a new grip geometry and a braided cable that reduces fatigue during extended scanning sessions.

AI-Powered Processing and DS Core Integration

Primescan 2 is deeply integrated with DS Core, Dentsply Sirona's cloud-based open digital platform. The scanner leverages new AI-powered processing algorithms that run in real time during acquisition, automatically detecting and flagging areas of insufficient data density and guiding the operator to rescan specific regions before the patient leaves the chair. The AI engine also performs automated margin detection for crown preparations, generating a suggested margin line that the clinician can review and adjust — a feature that Dentsply Sirona says reduces preparation review time by an average of 40% in internal testing.

Open Architecture and Laboratory Connectivity

Primescan 2 maintains the open architecture philosophy of its predecessor, supporting direct export to all major CAD/CAM systems and laboratory software platforms via standard STL and PLY file formats. Through DS Core, practices can send cases directly to connected dental laboratories, track case status in real time, and receive digital feedback from technicians without leaving the platform. Dentsply Sirona has also announced expanded connectivity with its Cerec Primemill and Primeprint systems, enabling a fully integrated in-office milling and 3D printing workflow.

Availability and Training

Primescan 2 is available for order globally from October 2026, with deliveries commencing in the first quarter of 2027. Existing Primescan users will be offered a trade-in programme, and all new purchasers will receive access to a comprehensive onboarding curriculum on DS Academy Campus, including live virtual training sessions and on-demand modules covering scanning technique, AI-assisted margin detection, and DS Core case management.

"Primescan 2 represents the next chapter in our commitment to making digital dentistry accessible, efficient, and clinically reliable for every practice," said Simon Campion, President and CEO of Dentsply Sirona. "We have listened carefully to feedback from thousands of clinicians and built a scanner that is faster, smarter, and more connected than anything we have offered before."
