FDI World Dental Congress 2023: A Look Back

The aftermath of a major event like the FDI World Dental Congress 2023 (FDIWDC23) was  an excellent time to reflect on the achievements, experiences, and lessons learned held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, from September 24th to 27t, 2023.  The  resounding success  of the FDI World Dental Congress closed its registration with over 10,752 people from 129 countries, including exhibitors and exhibition-only delegates.  h and was a resounding success. .

Breaking down the numbers, 78% of registrants were from Australia, followed by India, China, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States. Additionally, 2389 registrants were from interstate Australian locations, while 4838 attended solely for the exhibition, which spanned over two levels.

The ISO (International Standards Organization) / TC106 pre-WDC technical meeting was one of the many events that took place during the Congress, with 251 delegates from 22 countries, 12 of whom represented Australia. Attendees also had the opportunity to attend in-depth workshops, the FDI World Dental Federal Parliament, and a variety of social and networking events, such as dinners, fun runs, and even a cricket competition.

Events like FDIWDC23 leave a lasting impact, particularly in the host country. The event provided the ADA with several media opportunities to highlight the role of dentists in overall health, particularly in regards to vaping, the link between poor oral health and overall health, and the critical work of volunteer dental professionals in assisting those who have experienced sexual assault and domestic violence.

As envisioned, FDIWDC23 lived up to its "Educating for Dental Excellence" tagline, providing every participant with the opportunity to learn, investigate and grow, enriching the practice of dentistry for years to come.

PRE CONGRESS

The FDI World Dental Congress encompasses more than the advertised dates, with several crucial activities taking place beforehand. Among these is the FDI General Assembly, which serves as the supreme legislative and governing body of FDI and has a significant impact on dentistry worldwide. Participating parliament meetings are also vital. Furthermore, delegates can engage in informative workshops and masterclasses on a diverse range of topics. Attendees can even participate in the Tooth and Wicket Cricket, which provides an enjoyable and friendly experience for all.

MAIN SCIENTIFICE PROGRAMME

The Main Scientific Programme, spanning four days, offered attendees an abundance of knowledge from over 200 hours of presentations by renowned experts from both Australia and overseas. Besides the primary sessions, delegates were able to participate in Lunch ‘n’ Learn sessions hosted by experts in their respective fields, observe the launching of the ADA's new sustainability modules and the ADA Dental Health Foundation, and engage in the Member Forum, where all eight Presidents, Federal and Branch, were available to respond to attendees' inquiries.

EXHIBITION

The exhibition, sprawling over two levels, provided attendees with an opportunity to explore the latest advancements in dental technology and service offerings. Representatives were available to discuss their products or services and cater to the specific needs of the attendees. Notably, attendees could also attend brief oral presentations on abstract programs, participate in guided mindfulness sessions, engage in mini-golf, and even join a silent disco.
